Meet The Founder: Yaya

Hello and welcome to the Matchya universe, a tea dream birthed in my mum’s beautiful back garden in Edinburgh on a sunny spring afternoon.

My name is Yaya, and I have been a matcha lover since I can remember.

With the recent matcha boom, global demand has surged by 300% since 2019 and I noticed less and less faces like mine shaping the industry.

In 2025 I took it upon myself to source the best quality matcha I could find. This led me to create Matchya, which prides itself on quality, transparency, education and creating community.

As both a lifelong matcha lover and a doctor, I know firsthand how powerful this ancient superfood truly is - and trust me, it’s no joke! Matchya is 100% organic, pesticide-free, and made from the very first harvest leaves, meaning it’s naturally bursting with nutrients, antioxidants, and rich, vibrant flavor.

But Matchya is more than just a drink. It’s your little daily luxury, a moment of calm, a mindful ritual — the perfect way to pause, breathe, and reconnect with yourself.

I hope every sip brings you as much joy and peace as it does for me.

With love,

Yaya

Founder & CEO, Matchya LTD

About Matchya Tea

Matchya is proudly grown and harvested with traditional Japanese methods in Hangzhou, China - known by locals as 'heaven on earth' for its stunning natural beauty - where the tea history dates back over 1500 years.

This ties together the origins of matcha (from the Chinese Tang Dynasty 7-10th centuries) with the development and cultivation of matcha which originated since it was brought to Japan by Buddhist monk Eisai in 1191 - which is how we know and love matcha to this day.

Matchya is first harvest, 6A grade (highest grade), organic, pesticide free and is ordered in small batches. Our matcha is shade grown for 4 months prior to harvesting to maximise the concentration of chlorophyll and antioxidants such as L-theanine and EGCG, leading to a greater umami flavour, less bitterness and bringing out the vibrant green colour.

Our 6A Matchya forms a neon green colour which is reflective of the first-harvest quality - only the youngest and most tender leaves from each plant are harvested.

These leaves are then gently steamed to retain their colour, and then slowly stone milled - you won't get any grittiness with Matchya.

With the global matcha shortage placing an incredible amount of strain on small Japanese farms, we are responsibly sourced and produced in small batches to avoid adding to the shortage and production strain, while maintaining traditional methods and quality.

What makes Matchya premium?

Our Matchya is a small batch, 6A grade (highest grade) matcha which is completely organic and is made with the traditional Japanese methods of shade growing for 4 weeks, slow gentle steaming and stone grinding. These methods take time and is different to mass produced matcha, which is less green, grittier, more bitter and contains less nutrients.

By following these steps, Matchya achieves a bright neon green colour and naturally sweet umami taste, which signifies that the leaves harvested are the youngest, first-harvest, tender shoots on the plant. They are the most potent in chlorophyll and antioxidants and the quality is impossible to replicate with rushed, mass produced orders.

Does Matchya contain caffeine?

The typical serving size of matcha is 1-2g, with 2g of Matchya being approximately 60-70mg of caffeine, which is roughly equivalent to the caffeine in one espresso shot.

The recommended daily maximum for caffeine is 300-400mg of caffeine, which would be around 10g of Matchya.

The caffeine that Matchya offers is slow release and longer lasting - after all this is what Zen Buddhists traditionally drank to help them focus and meditate for long periods of time!

Caffeine from Matchya does not lead to a caffeine crash later on in the day, nor does it lead to the same jitters as coffee does - leaving you focused for longer!

Is Matchya gluten free or vegan?

Yes! Matchya is gluten free and suitable for vegans !

Is Matchya lab tested for heavy metals and pesticides?

Our Matchya is third party lab tested by Eurofins and is certified to be free of heavy metals and pesticides.

We are 100% organic!
